Mark Brautigam - On Wisconsin

In 2005 I began to take photographs in my home state of Wisconsin. Guided by the allure of the unexpected and the memories and associations I’ve gathered over a lifetime of living there, I would set out to photograph with an acute need to escape our over-connected
and increasingly alienating society. While, on a basic level, these photographs constitute a personal portrayal of the state of Wisconsin, it is essential that each image transcend the mere documentation of a place. I sought to imbue them with the tension of narrative and the essence of character. Each image a paragraph unto itself, these photographs inhabit the space between fiction and memory. The seasonal pattern on which they flow, from summer’s exuberance to wintry isolation, mimics the natural hunger and boredom of everyday life, revealing a sense of wonder in the ordinary.
